Martha was born in Millican, Texas to Pete and Celestina Manyose. She was the youngest of nine children. Her childhood years were spent on a farm, enjoying the country life. She and her family moved to rural Navasota where she spent most of her adolescence. Martha always took pride in her country roots and small-town lifestyle, always considering herself a country girl though she moved to Bryan, Texas in the early 1970s.
Martha was the first in her family to graduate high school. She attended the newly integrated Navasota High School in the late 1960s. Martha was a huge supporter of integration and easily made friends with people of all backgrounds. Not long after graduation, Martha traveled to New York City and London before spending several months living in Germany. She was quick to make friends and enjoy some of the local cuisine. However, her heart was never far from her beloved rural home.
Martha spent much of her life married and raising her ten children, whom she loved and cherished deeply. She always looked forward to a full house during the holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She enjoyed watching Hallmark Christmas movies, preparing and eating great food, and sharing lots of joy and laughter with her growing family.
Martha also enjoyed shopping at Walmart and tending to a small vegetable garden. Gardening was a way to reconnect with her country roots. She delighted in cooking with the foods she’d grown. As her mother before her, Martha was a phenomenal cook. Her family enjoyed her homemade tortillas, ribs with chile verde, and carne guisada among other dishes. Her deviled eggs and banana pudding were always a hit at family gatherings.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Celestina Manyose; her brothers Mike, Pete Jr., Costello, and Sunday Manyose; and her sisters, Paula Garcia, and Luisa Morello.
