Ron was born January 20, 1948, in Ottawa, Kansas. He graduated from Ottawa Senior High School in 1966, where he held records in both Football and Track and Field. He served in the United States Navy from 1968 until 1972 attaining the rank of ADJ 3rd Class. While in the Navy, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his military service, Ron settled in Brunswick, GA where he worked for Watch Security and later moved to Darien where he worked for Alltel and worked diligently to build his landscaping business. Ron owned and operated McIntosh Lawn Service.
Of all his interesting hobbies, Ron will perhaps be best remembered for his woodworking skills and his culinary skills. His hand-crafted clocks and cutting boards are true works of art, and anyone who has a piece of his hand-crafted outdoor furniture is fortunate indeed. He not only enjoyed this hobby very much, he also enjoyed giving the items to friends and family and enjoyed participating in Arts and Crafts Festivals. In addition to his wood working abilities, he operated what was lovingly called “The Purple Turtle,” a concession wagon from which he sold cotton candy, nachos, pickles, and popcorn. After he gave up traveling to festivals, he often donated cotton candy to various schools and organizations.
Those who knew Ron know how he loved to cook. He especially loved cooking for a crowd, especially outdoor cooking. Whenever any new kitchen gadget came out, he would be one of the first to buy one. Many of his friends were blessed to receive jars of his home-canned tomatoes, salsa, and pickles as well as Ron’s famous homemade chex mix and beef jerky. Tournament fishing was another hobby he enjoyed with the “Roadrunner Fishing Team.”
Ron was and always will be known as a hard worker and as a man with a heart of gold. He always tried to give back to his friends and to his community in any way he could. He was a past member of the Jaycees as well as the Lions Club, and he enjoyed coaching football at The Boys Club in Glynn County.
