January 15. She was born on July 28, 1925 to David and Elizabeth Winburn Sinclair in Dothan, AL.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Jean Sinclair Jones, who passed away two weeks ago.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan Stevens Tipaldos and Andy Tipaldos, and daughter, Debbie Stevens Owens, all of Brunswick. She is also survived by her two grandsons, Nicholas Tipaldos of New Orleans, LA and David Tipaldos of Brunswick, her granddaughter, Elizabeth Livingston Preece (Jay) of San Antonio, TX, her great grandson, Evan Tipaldos, and her great granddaughter, Ella Tipaldos, both of Brunswick.
Mary grew up in Atlanta and was an honor graduate of Decatur Girls’ High School in 1942. When she was a child, she and her family spent their summers on St. Simons Island. She attended Auburn University during her freshman through junior years. She married, and moved to Murfreesboro, TN. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and received her Master’s degree from Georgia Southern.
Mary taught fifth grade at Hobgood Elementary in Murfreesboro, TN before moving to St. Simons Island in 1960. She taught fifth grade at St. Simons Elementary, and then she was the director of the Adult Learning Lab at the Adult Education Center in Brunswick. She helped many students earn their GED’s. She retired after 36 years of teaching. She was honored twice as Georgia’s Teacher of the Year in Adult Education in 1969 and 1987.
Mary’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. She loved her church, St. Simons United Methodist, where she taught Sunday school, served as the Sunday school superintendent for 30 years, and served as an active volunteer in the church office. She was a member of the Lois Carlton Circle.
She was a past president of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Golden Isles unit of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, Saints and Sinners of St. Simons Methodist Church, IFA Seniors Organization, The Special Touch Ministry of St. Simons United Methodist Church, and the Golden Isles Auburn Club.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of the Golden Isles and Magnolia Manor. They would also like to thank caregivers Beverly Jaudon, Shanesia Jaudon, Shetoria Jaudon and Ann Brunswick.
The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the St. Simons United Methodist Church 624 Ocean Blvd. St. Simons Island, with Rev. Marcia Cochran officiating. 2 P.M. Monday, the 20th of January 2014. A reception will follow in the Gholson Room. There will be a private family burial at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens at a later time.
