Martha Jane Elliston Fowler, age 87, died on Friday, November 16, 2012, at Magnolia Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, on St. Simons Island, Georgia. She was born on October 25, 1925 in Rupert (Taylor County), Georgia, to William Edgar Elliston and Beulah Cochran Elliston. Upon completion of her high school education in 1944, Martha Jane and her older sister boarded a southbound train to begin a new life in Brunswick, Georgia. When the train made a scheduled stop in Montezuma, Georgia, Army Lieutenant John Perry Fowler and his mother boarded the train for Brunswick. This journey was the impetus for the courtship and subsequent marriage of John and Martha Jane on January 18, 1945, at First Baptist Church of Brunswick, Georgia. Their marriage lasted for sixty-two years, until John Fowler’s death on January 11, 2007. Mrs. Fowler retired after working for more than three decades at Brunswick Pulp and Paper. For the remainder of her days, she was an avid reader, bird watcher, and world traveler. She especially loved the unique beauty of butterflies and always wore a butterfly pin from her collection.
Survivors include her four daughters, Kathy Fowler Corwin (Doug), Nancy Fowler Rivers (John), Cindy Fowler Nolen (Jimbo), and Lindy Fowler Chapman. Mrs. Fowler is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. Additional survivors include a sister, Florece Coker of Manchester, Georgia, and a niece, Mary Jane Harper (Ed) of Warner Robins, Georgia.
A memorial celebration of life will be held in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, on Monday, November 19, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock a.m., with the Reverend David Yarborough officiating.
