Martha M. Banister, 84 of St. Simons Island, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church at 205 Kings Way, St. Simons Island, GA 31522 with a reception to follow, https://www.sspres.org/.
Born September 26th, 1938, in Audubon, IA, Martha was the daughter of the late Mrs. Catherine Cies McLeran and Mr. Thomas William McLeran. From a first marriage Martha became a savvy world traveler living in Belgium and Singapore while raising two beautiful children, Mark, and Elizabeth.
After having suffered the loss of her son Mark, and returning to the states, Martha found and married the love of her life in 1989, Edward Morton Banister, a WWII veteran of the US Navy and Princeton graduate. Upon Ed’s retirement from Baker Weeks, Chase Investments, and J. Walter Thompson, he and Martha moved to St. Simons Island where they joined St. Simons Presbyterian Church and became partners at The Pampered Foot, a long-standing upscale shoes, clothing, and accessories boutique that residents and visitors enjoyed for decades until its closure during the Covid years.
Martha is known for her incredible eye for style, deep business acumen and solid work ethic, her deep faith and positivity regardless of circumstances, her immense love for all animals, especially her very own Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, her endless love of and hospitality for her dear friends, and her dedicated love of her family.
Survivors include her brother Charles S. McLeran of Florida, daughter, Elizabeth Acuff Framson and her daughter Hannah Framson and son Samir Boumghait of Massachusetts, as well as her family by second marriage including stepdaughter Leslie Banister, step granddaughter Allison Sheets Gambone and her son Grayson of South Carolina, and Allison’s brother, Curtis Sheets.
Friends and family made Martha smile and always brought a twinkle to her eye and a story to share. Her faith in God saw her through conditions of health and heart to reunite her with her family in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations are graciously welcome to St. Simons Presbyterian Church, https://www.sspres.org/giving.html. Her church family, family of close friends, i.e. “Martha’s Village,” and her family were her strength and comfort during her final days. Those close to her will be forever grateful.
Immortality
Do not stand By my grave, and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep— I am the thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints in snow I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle, autumn rain. As you awake with morning’s hush, I am the swift, up-flinging rush Of quiet birds in circling flight, I am the day transcending night. Do not stand By my grave, and cry— I am not there, I did not die.
