Jimmy Wayne Canter

Born on July 22, 1947, in Lexington, Kentucky, Jim was the son of the late Hazel and Wilbur Canter. After graduating from Lafayette High School, Jim attended the University of Kentucky and then enlisted in the US Navy. He later attended Georgia Southern.

Jim met his wife, Becky, in Waycross, Ga. They were married and moved to St. Simons Island in 1981, where they raised their two children.

Jim retired after a successful 34 year career with IBM, where he achieved many awards for his sales performances over the years.

Not one to sit around, Jim began creating, marketing, and hosting sporting events at the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex and was also involved with the Golden Isles Soccer Association.

Jim is the owner of Southern Landscape and Outside Services. His employees have been a dedicated group during his illness and passing.

Jim was very involved in his children’s life, from coaching them in youth sports, to instilling in them the value of hard work and being the best that they could be. He was a proud father and grandfather.

Jim leaves behind his wife, Becky King Canter; a daughter, Laura Canter Lang; three grandchildren: Olivia, Andrew, and Caroline Lang; one son, Michael King Canter (Caroline); two sisters, Jane (Herb) McDowell, Joyce Randolf.

-Two sisters-in-law: Kim (Lon) Byrd, Karen (Greg) Tidmore; a brother-in-law: Casey (Margaret) King; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life for Jim will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 12:00 pm, at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, with the Reverand Wright Culpepper presiding. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that they consider a donation to their favorite charity.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at Southeast Georgia Health System, who took care of Jim during his illness, especially everyone on the 6th floor. Heartland Hospice is also to be commended for their compassion and kindness.

Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home have been entrusted with final arrangements.
