On August 7, 2021, Jacqueline King Ryder passed away of natural causes at the age of 89. Jacqueline, known as Jackie by family and friends, grew up in Maryland with her parents and sister. Jackie loved children, which was a large part of why she chose to become a teacher. She attended Madison College where she graduated with a teaching degree. As a freshman Jackie was set up on a blind date with the handsome John H. “Jack” Ryder, who was a senior at the University of Virginia. Jack and Jackie married April 17, 1954. They moved to Ocean View, Virginia where they met their lifelong friends, Bud and Margie Dorsey. Jackie taught grade school for 30 years in Portsmouth Public Schools and at Norfolk Collegiate.
Jackie was an exceptional wife and mother. She was the mother of three sons, Michael, Craig, and Tom. Her “boys” always kept Jackie busy. She enjoyed reading, birdwatching, needlepoint, bridge, watching UVA basketball, and spending time with her family in Kitty Hawk, NC. She was a member of the local garden club and the Red Hat Society. Jackie and Jack traveled to some amazing places, like Australia, Alaska, Egypt, and throughout Europe. Jackie and Jack retired to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where she was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica. Jackie enjoyed returning to the beach to visit her family over the years. She cared deeply for her family and expressed how lucky she felt to have met her great-grandchildren.
Jackie is survived by her husband, John H. Ryder; her sons Michael Ryder (Lori), Craig Ryder (Tracy), and Tom Ryder (Deanne); her grandchildren Christian, Erin (Jamie), Michelle, Winston, Katie (Spencer), Kyle, Jacob, Naomi, and Gavin; her great-grandchildren Connelly, Mason Lee, Killian, and Palmer; her sister Joanne King Rodgers; many nieces and nephews. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Ruby King; her aunts Verna Poe, Myrtle Donaldson, Margaret Vogts, and Gertrude Poe; her daughter in law Karen Hope Ryder.
Her service will be held at 2 p.m. August 22, 2021 at Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica of St. Simons Island, 6520 Frederica Road, St Simons, GA.
