If you knew Hans Trupp and asked him “How’s it going?” his reply would be “Dynamite!”
Hans Trupp, a remarkable individual and resident of St. Simons Island, GA since 1968, died on April 23, 2024 of heart failure. Hans grew up in Ridgewood Queens, NY and was the son of German immigrants Hans and Clara Trupp. His parents instilled in him a great love for country, duty and service.
While attending Clemson University, on a swimming scholarship, Hans earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with a concentration in Industrial Management, which prepared him well for the many twists and turns in his career.
Hans leaves to cherish memories of him: sons Hans Trupp and his wife Buffy, and their son Manu, of Vancouver, Canada, son Austin Trupp and his wife Stephanie and their sons Austin, Cole and Baron of Evans, GA., from his marriage to Pam Tollison Trupp Melancon, and a daughter Olivia Trupp who lives in Columbia, South Carolina.
For many years Lisa Patel of St. Simons Island, GA was a lovingly supportive partner to Hans.
Growing up Hans and his sister, Helene Trupp Wilson of Carlisle, MA, were constant companions. At a very early age they found adventure in riding the New York City subway trains and exploring the sites of “The City”. Helene died in 2017.
Hans and his younger sister, Margaret Trupp Heery who lives in Sarasota, FL, with her husband Joseph, talked almost every day. Helene, Margaret and Hans grew up as closely bonded siblings.
Through the years nieces Sara Wilson Angelino and Kirsten Wilson and nephew Grant Wilson kept in close contact with their Uncle Hans along with grand nieces and nephews.
Hans was highly decorated for his service as a F4B Phantom jet pilot flying off the aircraft carriers the USS Constellation and the USS Ranger in Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, which is awarded to those who distinguish themselves for heroism or outstanding achievement while participating in aerial flight, 12 Air Medals, 2 Navy Commendation medals, 2 Navy Achievement medals and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He served his last 2 years in the Navy at Glynco Naval Air Station as a basic jet navigation instructor.
His love of flying continued throughout his life and along with flying he had a financial interest in a few planes.
Upon leaving the Navy, Hans purchased a small property and casualty insurance agency on St. Simons Island, which became Trupp McGinty Insurance Services.
Hans Trupp, was founder of CCIM and former chairman of Trupp Hodnett Enterprises and The Management Company prior to taking the companies public (RZT NYSE) in an IPO in 1998. In 2019 he reentered the real estate business locally through an affiliation with eXp Realty.
National Radio Talk Show Host Barry Farber frequently invited Hans on the show as an expert to discuss aviation, military affairs, his support of Fair-Tax and many other subjects.
Hans loved St. Simons Island and in his words “without a doubt Barbara Jean’s Restaurant is the best”. He leaves many good friends on St. Simons Island.
Hans filled every day to the maximum and will be missed by many. He was the “Dynamite” that kept bursting with energy and new ideas.
At a later date inurnment with honors is planned for Arlington National Cemetery.
