George M. Yarborough, born on July 22, 1946, in Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away April 16th, 2024 at the age of 77. He was the son of Thomas Yarborough and Beatrice Priester Yarborough, both of whom preceded him in death.
George spent his early years in Sheldon, SC, before his family relocated to Tallahassee, FL, when he was 12. His journey continued with moves to Punta Gorda, FL, and eventually settling in Statesboro, GA, where he graduated from Statesboro High School in 1965. He spent his summers starring in the Callaway Gardens Water Ski show. Following his graduation, he attended Georgia Southern College before enlisting in the U.S. Navy.
During his time in the Navy, George served with distinction. After completing recruit training at Naval Station Great Lakes, he went on to assignments at various bases including the Naval Technical Training Center NAS Jacksonville and Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, CA. He proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Enterprise assigned to Fighter Squadrons VF-96 and VF-92 in Carrier Airwing 9. He was honorably discharged in 1969.
After his military service, George embarked on a successful career with the Georgia Ports Authority in both Savannah and Brunswick, GA, where he worked in management for 20 years. He witnessed and contributed to significant developments in containerization as well as bulk and auto transport during his tenure. In 1989, he joined Marine Port Terminals in Brunswick, where he worked for another 22 years before retiring in 2008.
Beyond his professional achievements, George was actively involved in numerous personal, business, and civic organizations. He was a dedicated member of various groups, including the International Management Council, Georgia Feed and Grain Association, Georgia Peanut Commission, Transportation Club of Savannah, Propeller Club of Georgia (past president Brunswick Chapter), Board of Directors of the Golden Isles Maritime Club, Board of Directors of the International Seafarers' Center (vice-president), and Board member of the Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, Optimist Club, and Solomon's Lodge F&AM #1 in Savannah. He was deeply involved in Masonic organizations, holding the esteemed rank of 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was a past member, serving as a deacon for 3 years, of St. Simons Presbyterian Church, and is a charter member of St. Simons Community Church.
George was a man of many passions and interests. He had an unwavering love for Georgia Bulldogs Football and enjoyed spending time on the golf course. Spending his entire life drawn to the water and cherishing his travels, George adored cruising and beach days. He had a fondness for dirty martinis and grilled pork, which he often shared with friends and family.
He is survived by the love of his life, Lynn Hamil, with whom he spent the last 18 years; his son, Scott and wife Robyn Yarborough and their sons Hunter and Austin; his son Chris and wife Shannon Yarborough and their daughter Edith; his sister, Anna Farmer, her son Drew and his wife Katie; and LaBruce Yarborough, former wife and mother of his sons.
George will be remembered for his infectious smile, his meticulous nature, and his gift for conversation. He had a unique ability to make everyone around him feel valued and special.
A memorial service to celebrate George's life will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, Georgia on Friday, April 26th, 2024. Visitation begins at 12:30 pm with a service following at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the International Seafarers' Center or the charity of your choice.
