Richard was born in South Georgia, where he lived an adventurous childhood growing up on Cumberland Island and Sapelo Island before moving to St. Simons Island in the second grade. Richard graduated from Glynn Academy in 1965 where he was a member of Phi Gams.
Richard had a love for boats. He drove the Brunswick pilot boat in high school, worked on tug boats, and was the captain for many years. He built eight boats during the course of his life, including a forty foot shrimp boat in his backyard. He was a lifelong fisherman and was passionate about the sport. He loved the game of golf and played for many years. He also enjoyed carpentry, wood working, and furniture making. Richard was also quite the chef, specializing in southern food.
Richard’s family and friends often called him by his nickname, “Country Rich.” He had the exceptional gift of gab and had never met a stranger. He was an exceptional storyteller. He loved to tell a joke, and his laughter that always followed was infectious.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Darcy Stubbs, Sr.; his mother, Ollie Mae Stubbs; and his brother, Elton Stubbs, Jr.
He leaves behind his wife, Debby Stubbs; daughter, Teri Stubbs; brothers, John (Marie), Bobby (Merry), and Jimmy; sisters, Carolyn Capps and Cindy Williams; and his sister-in-law, Peggy Stubbs, as well as many nieces and nephews.
