Salome (Samo) Bernal Cavazos, age 70, of Brownsville, Texas, entered eternal rest on March 2, 2021 at his loving home surround by his wife and children. He was a native of Brownsville, born and raised, graduated from Brownsville High School, was in the National Guard for 6 years, and worked 38 years for Union Pacific Railroad where he later retired and enjoyed his time traveling and creating memories with his family.
He married his long-loved wife of 49.5 years, Enriqueta Idalia Hinojosa-Cavazos, on June 2,1971, who survives him. He was preceded in death by his parents Antonio Cavazos and his beloved mother Gavina Bernal Cavazos. He is survived by his daughter, Iris Michelle Cavazos-Alfaro (Dr Carlos Alfaro) of Brownsville, TX., Veronica Lynn Cavazos-Lozano (Julio Cesar Lozano) of Brownsville, TX., son Salome (Sam) Cavazos II (Edwina Cavazos) of Brownsville, TX., and daughter, Krystal Lizeth Cavazos-Rocha (Rogelio “Roger” Rocha JR) of Brownsville, TX. His surviving grandchildren include: Damian, Italia, Itzel, Nevaeh, Ilea, Savannah, Sebastian, step-grandchildren Micheal Perez (Mickey), Alan, Julio Cesar (JC), Esmeralda, and great grandchild Gavin, Mason, and Max.
Upon graduation from Brownsville High School in 1970, Salome joined the National Guard where after serving for 6 years was honorably discharged. He then proceeded to work for the Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years, some which were served in Brownsville, TX., and others in Laredo, TX. He began retirement in 2011 where he enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife whenever he had a chance. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church where he attended faithfully with his family.
His hobbies included gambling, BBQ’ing, having huge parties, working on the yard, and always trying to fix “something”. He also enjoyed get togethers that he build a huge room just to host family functions. He was known for always being the goof ball of the group, and everyone knew they could count on him for anything they needed. He was a man with a short fuse, and a huge heart. And when he did anything he did it with all that he could. All those who knew him knew of his famous saying “Y al que no le guste…”
He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him including countless family members, friends, and children’s friends. He was loved and admired by all who knew him for his big personality, stubbornness, kindness, his big heart, optimism and drive, and view on life itself.
Serving as his pallbearers will be Salome “Sammy” Cavazos, Rogelio “Roger” Rocha JR, Julio Cesar Lozano, Mario Alvarado, Damian Diaz II, Tony Cavazos, Arnold Cavazos and Alfonso “Poncho” Rodea.
A visitation for Salome will be held Friday, March 5, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a rosary at 6 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Rose Lawn. A chapel service will occur Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 10:00 AM followed by a burial 11 AM at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens located at 4464 Old Port Isabel Rd., Brownsville, Texas 78526.
