returned to the Lord on December 21, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfredo "AA" Lavios and Zoila Marques Lavios, and by her brother Al Lavios.
Christine graduated from Brownsville High School in 1961. She received her bachelor's degree
from Pan American University and her master's degree in Guidance Counseling from University
of Texas at Brownsville. She retired from BISD after a career serving the children of
Brownsville in Garza, Martin, and Burns elementary schools.
Christine endures in the memories of her loved ones. She is survived by her husband of 61 years,
Victor Pattie Black. Her three children Victor (Elizabeth) Black, Jr., Jennifer Black (Shane)
Sveiven, and Darrell Scott Black. Her grandchildren Jonathan (Jenna), Ryan (Danielle), and
Victoria Black, and Noah and Shelby Sveiven. And her great-grandchildren Jolainy, Juliana, Joy,
Orion, and Jameson Black, and Matthew Fernandez. She is also survived by her cousin and
lifelong friend, born three months before her, Estella Cornelia "Corny" Cortinas.
In the days before she died, she looked forward to a Christmas season with her children,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her extended family. The day before she died, she
discussed the gifts she wanted to give her great-grandchildren and the ten dozen tamales she
ordered for everyone. In the moments before her final surgery the day before she died, she
prayed not for health but for her family and that God's will would be done. Until the end, she
embodied the highest ideals of love for God and unselfish love for others. We are all who we are
because she loved us.
A visitation for Christine will be held Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a Chapel Service at 3:00 PM in Chapel of Angels at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista, 125 Mcdavitt Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78521.
