Tom was my mentor in 1964.  He and I were the only licensed Mathematics teachers.  I loved his sense of humor.  He taught me so much about teaching that I couldn't thank him enough.  I have been looking for him for many years and I found him online too late.  Bless his family and may he rest in peace.

His  spirit resides in those he  taught. I  thank him for his encouragement when I really needed encouraging.

Mr Gallagher, I didn't know it at the time but you were one of the great ones. Thank you for never giving up on us as a whole (IS 88 Students). You cared and shared your time with everyone. Race, color, religion, didn't matter, what mattered to you was that we learned. In my opinion the school should be renamed the Thomas J Gallagher Intermediate School or have a school named after you. Also Thank you for your Service with the Air Force.

I was talking about him to my children. Very smart man and genuine!

I remember Tom as a true teacher who really loved to teach.  He was friendly, warm, intelligent and caring.  He truly had many talents and skills.  He will be missed.

Mr. Gallagher made math fun for me.  He taught me, in the 70's, how to figure out batting averages.  And what does it mean. Intro into statistics.  This knowledge helped me thru college and my professional career.  I thank you Sir!  I know that you are still teaching in heaven.  God Bless!!!

Tom Gallagher epitomized the Renaissance man, and was as humble as he was brilliant and kind. He was a math teacher who impacted generations; an athlete and pilot who kept his many accomplishments private; and most of all, a mentor to one of my very best friends, Beth Shapiro. My sincerest condolences to all who knew and loved him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Gallagher family.  Mr. Gallagher was a unforgettable teacher and a fantastic human being.

Tom, a.k.a., "The Flying Swan"...that was his nickname in college, I recently found out.  If only I could've been a fly on the wall, I would've loved to have seen him play.  He was my teacher, my coach, and a guardian angel.   He will always be special.  "Get going!" he's probably saying!

Tom Gallagher was the classic life- changing teacher for many of us at I.S. 88.  He was gentle, but rewarded perseverance.  He emanated pride in his student's success and had an intuitive way of drawing out a love of learning. Tom inspired me to try things that were difficult (engineering and firefighting) and even 40 years later we shared a deep bond of affection for each other.  I will miss him very, very much but  will be grateful to him forever. 
I aspire to touch people the way you did me, Tom. You were a savior.

Tom, aka "The Flying Swan"....he always shared the message of working hard, and never hesitated to help people.  He would tell me stories of how he ran into old students on the street, and describe how they were in class, too.  The unofficial Mayor of Park Slope, and the spirit of the Y (do they know what they've lost?).  In the time where people are glued to their phones, Tom loved to chat in person.  He will always be special.

During one of our flights and after having made a couple of successful maneuvers Tom rewarded me with several Gummy Worms. I knew from that moment that we would be friends for life. Tom was a gift from the creator and I looked forward to being with him as often as possible. He was a man of faith, sharp intellect and a wonderful sense of humor. Rest in Peace buddy.

Mr. Gallagher was my Algebra teacher at PS 10 in Park Slope.  He was a gifted and patient teacher.  I hold fond memories of him.  My thoughts are with his wife and family at this time.  RIP Mr. Gallagher.

Tom was our gracious next door neighbor in park slope. He was always so sweet and welcoming. Always offering a hand, he helped my roommate and I get our cumbersome dining room table into our tiny apartment door when we first moved in. He will be greatly missed for his generosity of spirit and good humor.

I have known Tommy at the 9th Street YMCA for many years. His humor,  good-nature and harmonica playing were always a welcomed site. I always enjoyed his math puzzles and flight stories. I have enjoyed seeing the pictures posted here of a rich life he had lived, long before I met him. He will be missed my many!

One of the kindest people you will ever know it was an honor meeting him. Parkslope , the world lost a great one.

Tom  was my first flight instructor, and I was his first civilian student in civilian life from the beginning to obtaining my license. We have remained in contact for all these years and although I live in Rhode Island now, did visit him in the Fall of 2011. He will always remain in my memory as a wonderful person, fantastic instructor, and someone I will miss very much. To say he was one of a kind would be an understatement. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
