Stacy Lynn Miller died peacefully on March 7, 2024 at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital surrounded by her family, who sang her favorite lullabies and hymns, told her how proud they were of her and how much she was loved.
Stacy was born in Wheaton, Illinois in 1954. Her parents moved the family to Summit, NJ and in 1978. Stacy graduated from McGill University, Montreal, Canada earning a BA in Psychology.
A single mom, Stacy raised her three children with her ex-partner. She leaves behind her children, three beautiful grandchildren, and four younger brothers. Predeceased by her mother and father.
Stacy was caring, brilliant, and strong. She was a teacher (in every sense of the word). A babysitter from a young age, then a tutor, a mother, a camp supervisor, and then director, a science teacher, and finally a Nani, she was always nurturing and helping find the light in those around her.
In the 90’s, Stacy worked at Vacation Camp for the Blind, first as a supervisor and eventually as a director. Stacy loved to care for people of all ages and needs. She encouraged campers’ curiosity, wonder, and their belief that they could try and succeed when things were unfamiliar and difficult. She was an inspiration for staff members and campers to nurture and take better care of each other.
Over the past 20 years Stacy worked at Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) in Brooklyn, starting as a substitute teacher and finally as the lower school science teacher. Stacy enriched the lives of hundreds of MMFS students and faculty. Whether building waddle and daub houses during Medieval Studies, or leading a trip for an ocean study or beach clean-up, Stacy always centered her work on the students, encouraging their sense of curiosity and wonder. As a head teacher, Stacy partnered with and mentored many associate teachers. She mentored teachers by giving them space to experiment, grow, and find their own voice. Many MMFS teachers attribute their success as educators to Stacy.
She loved tv and movies, especially Star Trek and As Time Goes By. She was always happy to get a meal or watch something with you. She listened to your problems and tried to help you with them. She knew when to offer advice and when to just say sorry and hold you. We love and miss her so much.
A memorial service will be held at the Brooklyn Meeting House at 110 Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 11:30 am.
