John C. Rowland of Brooklyn, a Merchant Marine and U.S. Army Veteran, passed away at home at the age of 96 on July 13, 2024. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years Angela Rowland. John was also preceded in death by his loving son, John Charles Rowland, his son in law Joseph Guarrera, Jr., and his three brothers, Emmit Rowland (Kay), James Rowland (Trudy), and Ernest Rowland (Abby).
John is survived by his devoted children Mary(Roger), Roseanna, James (Kathy) and his daughter-in-law Barbara; his devoted grandchildren Samantha, Allyson, Joseph, Jack, Alexandra, Jason, Thomas, and Sean; his brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Patricia, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A true patriot, John joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific War Zones during World War II. Thereafter, John joined the United States Army and continued to serve his country during the Korean War and completed his service after the War in the United States Army Reserves. John worked for the United States Postal Service for over thirty years and, after retiring from the USPS, worked as director of the mail room at Polytechnic Institute in downtown Brooklyn.
John loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and reading but his greatest love was spending time with his family. As “Pop-Pop” would always say at the end of a family event, it was time to get up the hill. John has made his final trip up that hill and will be missed by all. We look forward to joining him, Angela, John and all our deceased family members and friends when it is our time to get up the hill.
A visitation for John will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Interment at Calverton National Cemetery at 12:00pm on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Veterans For America.
