Born on October 16, 1951, Carl was a lifelong New Yorker and graduated from Benjamin Cardozo High School. During his youth, he loved spending time at his family’s farm in South Carolina. As an adult, he worked various jobs including as a cook in Madison Square Garden and security guard at Fashion Institute of Technology. He was the proud father of two children, Evelyn Johnson and the late Clifford Johnson, and loving grandfather to John Johnson, Precious Coleman, and Zion Coleman. He also leaves behind his mother Corine Schwarzer, and siblings Sheila, Janice, Regina, Marsha, Frank, Arnold, Glen, William, Robert, Nathaniel, and Michael. He is preceded in death by his father Frank Miller Jr., wife Cynthia Stubbs, and sister Diane Stubbs.
Throughout his life, Carl dedicated himself to fighting for the rights and well-being of low-income communities. Carl was a proud member of VOCAL-NY, a grassroots organization that amplifies the voices of the marginalized to lead meaningful change. Carl's work focused on advocating for an end to mass incarceration, the drug war, homelessness, and the AIDS and Hep C epidemics. He fearlessly challenged systemic injustices and tirelessly worked to dismantle the barriers that prevented individuals from accessing the support and resources they deserved.
Carl's impact extended far beyond his immediate community. His dedication to empowering others and creating a fairer society made him a respected figure in the larger social justice movement. His advocacy work led to legislative reforms, increased funding for crucial programs, and improved access to vital services for large swaths of New Yorkers. Carl's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of activists to fight for justice and equality.
Carl was a cherished member of his community, he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
