Richard Stephen Vernick, aged 72, passed away on May 7, 2024. He was the son of Nathan and Helen Vernick of Brookline, the brother of Judith A. Peloquin and the Uncle of Rachael R. Peloquin and Samuel W. Peloquin.
Richard grew up in Boston then Brookline. An aficionado of public transit, he loved the city and remained in the area all of his life.He graduated from Brookline High School in 1969 and Suffolk University in 1973.
He was a life long shopper and early on worked in retail in downtown Boston. When Gilchrist's and then R.H Sterns closed, he took a civil service exam at the suggestion of a great aunt and found his career working for the Parole Board for 35 years. He was devoted to his job and made many dear friends along the way.
Socially, he found a place in the LGBT community. He volunteered at the Living Center in Boston for many years, losing many friends along the way. He stayed in touch with members of his support group and celebrated Gay Pride.
Rich enjoyed domestic travel, visiting many major cities and often returned to Las Vegas for the music and shows. He was a huge fan of roller derby, bowling and the Boston Celtics. He watched game shows and classic tv.
He was a gentle and loving soul who brightened the lives of those he met along the way. He talked with everyone, knew the names of the banker, the pharmacist, the people at the diner he frequented. He will be missed.
A funeral service for Richard will be held Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02445. Following the funeral service will be a committal service at 12:30 PM at Meretz Cemetery, 19 Washington St, Woburn, MA 01801.
