Just heard about Al‘s death. My heart is broken. Thank you for all the wonderful meals and being included with your family. My memories are beautiful of being able to spend time with all of you.

We were medical colleagues and friends at St. Elizabeth's for many years, and I will always be grateful to Alan for his gentle kindness to me several years ago when I was  facing a potentially serious medical situation. His sense of humor and  his good spirit were delightful and constant. His work for player safety in hockey was  matched by his years of expert diligence running the hospital's investigational review committee, vital to patient safety. I last saw him when he had lost his mobility, but he never lost his spirit.  He was a wonderful physician.

“The Best” is an oft overused phrase but so fitting when referring to Dr. Alan Ashare. Beginning with his AHACM involvement with my father in the 80s through the last time I saw him at a Boston College Symphonic Band concert on the Esplanade, “Doc” Ashare and his smile seemed to be everywhere in my life. He invited me to participate with HECC as a rink manager, often stopped by Watertown Arena when I managed there, never refused a “hockey call” and was a very enjoyable guest speaker for the NorthEast Ice Skating Managers’ Association.
His work with Travis Roy, son of former rink manager Lee Roy, could never be overestimated.
He truly seemed to be everywhere.
May others take his example and give back daily in life.
Rest in peace, “Doc,” I love you!

Dr. Ashare was I wonderful man who always had the best interest of the student athletes in mind as the MIAA Sports Medicine Committee Chair for so many years.  His wisdom that he shared with the committee was always enlightening.  It is no doubt that the athletic teams that he worked with are safer because of the great work he did every day.  We will miss his leadership at our meetings.

Dr. Ashare was the first Nuclear Medicine physician I was introduced to, about 24 years ago when I began my career as a health physicist.  Over the years, my life has been so enriched by knowing this gentle, kind, and helpful soul. Besides being a brilliant physician, forever willing to train others in Iondine-131 treatments, Dr A always had a twinkle in his eyes, and a trenchant wit.   And he was an expert in sleight of hand, making quarters disappear to liven up the mood.  He used to remind us that he was a physicist before he was a physician, and had a deep understanding of whatever topic he spoke about.  

My deepest condolences to the Ashare family; Dr A will be deeply missed.

I was saddened to hear the news of Alan's passing. I have worked with him on hockey standards and safety in ice hockey for well over 25 years. His love of the game of hockey and his dedication to improving the safety for everyone was written on his face every time that I would see him. His contributions to the game at the local, national and international levels will always be remembered by those of us that were fortunate enough to know him. I will miss him and his self-deprecating humor and I will do my best to continue his legacy.

When I worked at SEMC, Dr. A would always come by my office looking for help with some technology, and the conversations would take a turn and I’d talk to him for about an hour or two about family and hockey.

During slow moments, I would take a walk upstairs just to see if he was available, to learn something clinical and listen to his wonderful stories.

I was saddened when I heard the news of his passing. I will keep his memory and legacy with me.

Dr. Ashare was a very longtime Chair of the MIAA Sports Medicine Committee.  In that role he guided MIAA school leaders in a vision of safety for all student athletes of all abilities.  He was always an intelligent and wise man as to how to make high school sports safer through careful thought, consideration and accurate information.  He worked to be abreast of so many topics in particular concussion and equipment safety.

I could not begin to count the many athletes that he impacted over his many years of service to MIAA member schools.  Thousands and thousands of student athletes were safer because of his leadership.  

I will personally miss the many conversations about his medical work, his life and just simply his beautiful person!

He is and will be missed!

Doc was a such a great and kind man, and a cherished friend.  I have so many memories – trips to the Chicago Showcase, lunches with Travis, magic tricks, his dry sense of humor, his incredible memory.  I think the way Doc led his life, always helping others, can best be characterized as – the next person who has an unkind word to say about Doc will be the first.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your whole family.  I worked for Dr. A for 20 years and couldn't have asked for a better boss. He was kind to  everyone he came in contact with from the technologists, residents, students, foreign doctors, and  cleaning staff.     He was very sensitive and thoughtful.  I'll always remember  that when I just started working as a new tech I had a patient who soiled himself, he jumped right in and helped me clean him up! He taught us about hockey safety, "Heads Up Don't Duck", medical conditions, etc. 
I was indeed forunate to have worked for such a "mensch".  He'll be greatly missed.

My condolences to the entire Ashare family. I was fortunate to have worked for Dr. A (as we called him) for nearly 2 decades. I will never forget your families kindness and taking me in as one of your own when I first started working at St. E’s. I remember getting a special invite to go to an Olympic? soccer game at Harvard in the family wagon. It was so fun! The Ashare kids antics were funny and reminded me of home. The dinners you hosted and all your other kindness towards my colleagues, me and later my own family was truly a blessing. 

After 40 years in the field, Dr. A and the St.Es crew will always be “the favorite place I worked” I feel so fortunate we all were able to get back together a couple of times in the past couple of years. (Albeit under unfortunate circumstances.)
Godspeed Dr. A you were a blessing in my life and you will be missed!❤️

Sue, Matt, Lori, Jenn, Andrew,     I am so sad to learn that Dr. A has passed away .  I worked with him for many years in Nuclear Medicine at St. E's.   I learned so much from him, in Nuclear Medicine, and as a person.  He was so kind and compassionate to his pt's and his staff!  He was not only my boss, but a good friend.  When we had our department dinners, I remember his love of ice cream (specifically at Cabots in Newton )  He was affectionaly "Doc" at Mass Hockey, but always "Dr A" at St E's!                                                                                                            
Dr A, though you have left us, your legacy will remain  forever,
