and expired at the Alive Hospice in Nashville on December 15, 2016.
He is survived by his life companion of 26 years, Rebecca G. Rhodes, J.D., his mother, Gretchen B. Smith; his father, Bradley E. Smith, all of Nashville, and his sister, Ione L. Smith, D.V.M., of Lebanon.
He attended University School of Nashville from third grade through graduation, then took his B.A. and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University. His law practice emphasized intellectual property, music, and entertainment.
From age 10 until just before his death he was devoted to the Korean martial art, Tae Kwan Do, winning multiple trophies in regional contests, and later assisting in leadership of the Haw Tae Whae Tae Kwon Do club. Mr. Haw was his revered mentor.In early life he studied composition at the Blair Academy and guitar with John Knowles.
He was an original member of the Young Nashvillians group, and last year participated in their reunion performance. In the 90's he frequently appeared with the Dino Bradley group, along with Bill Buechler and Scott Kinney at the landmark Silver Dollar Saloon on Broadway.
Later he received international attention as an early proponent of the fretless guitar and for performances teamed with his pal John Hughes featuring computer generated music intermingled with live guitar and electronic horn.
A memorial service is scheduled at the Brentwood Patton-Roesch Funeral Home at 9010 Church Street in Brentwood On Saturday, January 21 at two o' clock in the afternoon with visitation one hour prior. Snacks will be served after the service.
