Dr. Green was born on November 30,1944 to Emma Louise (Peterson) Green Wilson
and Charles Green in Washington, DC. Richard spent the majority of his life in the
District of Columbia where he attended Mott ES, MacFarland JHS and McKinley HS.
Upon completion of high school, he was admitted to Howard University, graduated in
1967 with a B.A. in Pharmacy and was admitted to medical school. Rip completed
medical school and became a Doctor of Medicine in 1973. He then opened his ObGyn
medical practice at the Washington Hospital Center in 1978. For 40 years, he met the
health needs of women in the DC community and delivered hundreds of healthy
babies.
On July 24,1976, Richard married his college sweetheart, Karen Leigh McIver. They
were blessed with three beautiful children, daughter, Kimberly Gabrielle (Green)
Anderson and twin sons, Remington McIver and Ryan Peterson. The Green family
enjoyed traveling near and far. Some of their most treasured memories included
summer vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico and Myrtle Beach with family and friends.
Richard was a die-hard Redskins fan. He dabbled in coin collecting, was fond of civil
war history and enjoyed a good mystery novel. He will be remembered for his sense of
humor, dry wit and his easy-going personality.
Lecturer, spokesperson and advocate for women’s health, Richard held multiple
positions and served in numerous capacities throughout his distinguished medical
career. Most notably, he was honored to serve as National Assistant Secretary of the
American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), President of the Medical and
Dental Staff at the WHC and Chief of Staff on the Washington Hospital Center Board
of Directors.
After retirement, Richard relocated to the sunshine state (Florida), refurbished his 1976
Corvette Stingray and planned to enjoy life close to his daughter and her husband,
Dorian. As his health began to decline, his sons moved to Florida and all three children
lovingly cared for him at his home.
Richard is survived by his former wife, Karen McIver Green, his three children, sisters
Antoinette Green and Cassandra Wilson, brothers, Corey and Stephan Green, twin
niece and nephew, Theodore and Cassidy Wilson and his son-in-law, Dorian Anderson.
