EVELYN ELIZA BLACK SMITH
Evelyn Eliza Black Smith accepted the Lord’s call to come home with Him on Friday, February 19, 2021. We can hear her voice rejoicing AMEN, AMEN, AMEN, Hallelujah, Thank You God!
Evelyn was born on December 15, 1939 in Prince George’s County to Eliza and Ira Black. At an early age, Evelyn loved fashion, dancing, and cosmetology and she worked as a hair stylist in her earlier years. Evelyn was educated in Prince George’s County Public Schools. For 22 years, she worked as a dietician for the Prince George’s County Public School Board where she retired from on January 31, 2005. She was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 275.
Evelyn married Jerome Kern Smith on September 27, 1990. When her daughter Inger passed, Evelyn took on the role of mother to her grandson Lorenzo Black who was an accomplished and well-known musician and vocalist. She was also a dedicated guardian to her niece and nephew Christine and Joseph. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and caregiver to anyone in need. Evelyn was a faithful member of Christ Mission Church in Landover, MD.
On December 15, 2019, the family honored Evelyn on her 80th birthday with a surprised celebration attended by her family and friends. This celebration brought so much joy to her heart that she rejoiced every day in the love from her family. All of her nieces and nephews will always remember her sternness, that little pinch on the arm when you needed to get in line and most of all, her always ending a visit with I LOVE YOU!
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Ira and Eliza Black; her daughter, Inger Black, grandson Lorenzo Black; brothers, Johnnie (Lula Mae) Black, Emory (Shirley) Black; Theodore (Peggy) Black: Sisters Bertha Mae (Henry) Thomas, Charlena (Joseph) Gardner, Sallie (John Henry) Wilcox and host of nieces and nephews.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband, Jerome Smith; brother-in-law Victor Smith, sisters-in-law Joan Smith and Peggy Black, nieces Christine Stafford, Phyllis Black, Nadrian Teclar, Tina (Bennie) Hayes, Roxanne Black, Johnetta Black, Barbara Black; nephews Willie (Kermia) Stafford, Joseph Thomas, Jack Gilliums, Charles Peyton, Noble Wilcox, and a host of loving grand and great cousins, nieces, nephew, and many friends.
