Evelyn Sanders Clark, born 1937 on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina Evelyn Simmons. She was the first child of the late Martha Sanders and Vincent Cheney, died peacefully a departed this earthly life on December 24th, 2022.
Living in Savannah, Georgia a short time with her Mother Martha Saunders prior to moving to Queens, New York where she was then raised by both Martha and Walter Sanders. Later, she graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1957. Evelyn then attended Beth Israel School of Nursing becoming a registered Nurse.
Evelyn married the late Howard Alvin Shipman whom she gave birth by having her first child, a son, Scott Sherwood Shipman in New York. Later, Evelyn Married Mason Lee Clark and giving birth to her second son Eliot Lee Clark raising her two sons in Washington, D. C.
She worked at D. C. Jail as a Registered Nurse and various locations within District Government before retiring after 28 years of Federal Service from the United States Soldiers Home in Washington D.C.
After retirement, Evelyn moved back to Savannah, Georgia to be closer to her late Mother Martha and Walter Saunders to help along with her sister Jeanette Jones. She became a devoted member of Central Missionary Baptist Church. Evelyn also could not resist the challenge of teaching, tutoring aspiring Registered Nurses, Nurse’s assistants and Licensed Practical Nurses before moving back to Washington D.C. to live out the rest of her years.
Evelyn was proceeded in death by her first Husband Howard Alvin Shipman, her mother Martha Sanders, father Walter Saunders and Foster Daughter Patricia Small.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories her son, Scott Sherwood Shipman and his wife Sherell Shipman. Son, Eliot Lee Clark. Grand Daughters Patrice Elise Shipman, Brianna Sweeney. Grandsons Amahd Mason Clark, Akeem Mason Clark, Londell Marcus Clark and Damon Harrison. Evelyn also leaves behind Sister Jeanette Jones, Uncle Nathaniel Warren who was like her brother, Nieces Donna Jones, Debra Jones, Clareece Glover, Nephew Ross Jones and Grand Nieces Shareema Jones, Cassandra Jones, Chandra Manigo, Jeanette “Baby Jane” Jones and Grand Nephew Isaiah Jones
A visitation for Evelyn will be held Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will occur Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 12:00 PM. A service of committal and interment will occur Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
