Charles Wilmot Coombs

Willie married his late wife, Enid, and they later immigrated to Washington, D.C. Willie was a skilled craftsman working in steel manufacturing and concrete. He proudly told stories of how he helped to build the first Washington, D.C. Metro station. After suffering an on-the job injury, Willie trained and worked as an auto-body mechanic. He often could be found restoring cars for family and friends. Willie loved to travel with Enid, taking trips throughout the United States and abroad. One of his most memorable trips was to London and his visit to Buckingham palace as he had a special fondness for Queen Elizabeth. He would recount the story about receiving a tuppence from Queen Elizabeth when she visited Jamaica after her coronation. Willie especially loved the beach, was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and loved horse racing. He will be remembered for his willingness to always lend a helping hand. He was a true handyman who put his varied skills to work helping friends and family with household repairs. He also was teased for running a free “taxi service” providing a ride whenever needed.

Willie is survived by four children: Caroline Schmid (Philip), Dianne Coombs; Verna Thompson (Ian) and Charles Coombs (Juliet); 7 grandchildren: Dayne, Olivia, Natasha, Khamal, Khajaughn, Terell and Chantal; 5 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and devoted friends.
