Doug was born on December 19, 1959 in East Elmhurst, New York to Judith Shepherd Frank and Geert E Frank. He spent his youth between St Croix in the US Virgin Islands and Kensington, New Hampshire. Doug attended Berry Academy as well as Berry College in Mt. Berry, Georgia where he earned a BFA in 1983.
Doug had a lifelong love of art and teaching. He taught Art Education in Georgia, St Croix and New Hampshire. He was a truly gifted artist, working in a wide variety of mediums. In recent years his focus and passion had been photography. He was involved extensively in the Vermont Center for Photography, both as a participant and as a board member.
Doug had an adventurous spirit, traveling widely through America and Europe. With a passion for music and dance he helped found the annual Contra Dance event in St Croix, bringing together a broad range of similarly minded people who share his passion. He assisted with this event for more than 20 years.
In 1998 Doug made his home in Putney, VT where he built Milagro, a beautiful Arts & Crafts home that he enjoyed sharing with visitors. For the last five years he lived in Guilford, Vermont with his partner, Jessica.
Doug’s greatest joy and accomplishment was his son Noah, who is now 21 and a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
From birth Doug struggled with many serious health conditions, resulting in multiple open heart surgeries. Doug beat the odds many times throughout his life, but ultimately was unable to overcome the complications caused by his condition. Doug passed away surrounded by friends and family at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital.
Doug is survived by his son Noah Frank, partner Jessica Thomas, mother Judith Shepherd-Rains and her husband David Rains, stepmother Leslie Frank, sister Cassie Frank, brother Tiger Frank and extended family members. Doug was a unique and generous man who loved life, and saw beauty everywhere. He was well loved by many of the people he met throughout his life, and is survived by a long list of friends from his travels, Berry College, St Croix and Vermont.
