Yoyi is survived by her husband of 49 years, Barry Wharton, her daughter Tracy and her husband David Hucul, her daughter Jaime and her husband Gary Foll, her grandchildren Georgina “Gigi” and Alexander Hucul and Garett and Audrey Foll, and her sisters Maria White and Kristy Quintela and their families.
Born on January 13, 1953, in Havana, Cuba, to Jose and Georgina “Cuca” (Guilarte) Garcia, she moved, with her parents and older sister, Maria to Miami, Florida in December 1960. She attended Gesu Catholic School, Notre Dame Academy, and graduated in 1970 from Miami Carol City High School.
In January 1968, at her 15th birthday party, she met and ultimately fell in love with Barry Wharton. They have been together ever since, marrying on July 31, 1971. Moving to North Carolina in 1973, Yoyi supported her husband throughout his collegiate pursuits and began her career as a bookkeeper. In 1976, they moved to Tampa, Florida where they have lived ever since.
While working full time and caring for her family, Yoyi earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of South Florida. Outside of work, she served as treasurer for many organizations including the Florida Academy of Sciences, Brush Creek HOA, as well as local PTAs. After retiring in 2013, she sought out activities that brought her immense joy; spending time in North Carolina where she co-designed and built her dream cabin in the mountains, countless trips to Miami to visit her parents and sisters, traveling and cruising to exotic destinations, visiting her daughters, but most of all being Mimi to her beloved grandchildren.
A beautiful light has been extinguished, and she will be forever missed.
