Born in Paterson on August 12, 1933, Ruth graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1951. She later pursued a career in law enforcement, paving the way as the first female graduate of the Bergen County Police Academy on June 15, 1971.
Ruth began her distinguished career as a campus security officer in the patrol division at William Paterson College. She then continued her commitment with the Oakland Police Department, where she dedicated over a decade to protecting and serving her community. Ruth was not only a respected law enforcement officer but also a devoted community member. She was a dedicated member of the Oakland First Aid Squad for nearly 20 years, earning the honor of becoming a certified Lifetime Member and squad Captain. In 1969, she was recognized with the Oakland Women’s Club Woman of the Year award. After decades of public service, Ruth retired in 1991, leaving behind a lasting impact on her community.
In her spare time Ruth pursued her love for travel, with Italy holding a special place in her heart as her favorite destination. Ruth also enjoyed playing cards and was particularly skilled at blackjack.
Ruth leaves fond memories to her children, Harold Terwilliger and his wife Beverly, and Ruth Roberto; her grandchildren, Shawn Roberto Hoppe and her husband Jason Margelefsky), Joseph Roberto and his wife Alaina, Harold Terwilliger, and Robert Terwilliger; and her great-grandchildren Elizabeth Smith and Bryce Roberto.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband William E. Philpot; her parents Joseph L. and Jane Elizabeth Mondelli; and her brother Joseph Mondelli Jr.
A visitation for Ruth will take place Monday, August 19, 2024 from 2 to 4pm and from 6 to 8pm at Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St., Branchville, NJ. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 11:30am at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, 22-21 Maple Ave, Fair Lawn, NJ.
