William Overstreet

Overstreet, William B., 96, a resident of Annapolis for over 30 years, previously of the DC/ Metro area, found peace on July 21, 2018. A native of Roanoke, VA, Bill attended Central High School in the District of Columbia and then studied engineering at the University of Maryland. He left college to enlist in the army, serving his country during World War II, where he saw action in North Africa and the Pacific. He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers as a lieutenant colonel.

After the military, Bill joined the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1946. With more than 30 years of service, he retired as assistant director from their Reston, VA headquarters. During his career at USGS, Bill was an active member of American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, where he later earned the distinction of honorary member. Also active in international affairs, Bill served as a delegate to meetings of the International Federation of Surveyors and traveled worldwide to attend those meetings. In 1973, he became the first U.S. representative to serve as secretary general in that organization's 100 year history and later served as vice president.

Bill, always an avid sports fan, also enjoyed playing many years of softball. As a life long fan of the Washington Redskins, many of his Sunday afternoons were dedicated to watching those football games on television.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Doris L. Overstreet, of Annapolis, MD. He is also survived by his loving children: Dale L. Overstreet (Susan) of Charlotte Hall, MD; Glen F. Overstreet (Cindy) of Mt. Airy, MD; and Ann E. McDonald (Tim) of Germantown, MD, as well as seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his first born son, Mark H. Overstreet.
