Melvin (Mel) Jeffery Newman, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, nephew, and friend, passed away on November 8, 2024. Born on October 19, 1957, he was the cherished son of Betty L. Butler and the late Melvin O. Newman.
Mel was preceded in death by his father, Melvin O. Newman; his brother, Dereke O. Newman; and his son, Amir Jeter. He leaves behind a legacy of love, remembered fondly by his mother, Betty L. Butler; four adoring grandchildren: Damir Jeter, Gabrielle Jeter, Amiyah Jeter, and Zamir Jeter; as well as his siblings: Jason C. Newman, Daniel T. Newman, Andre I. Butler (Trudy), Bridgette L. Branson, and Kim Y. Newman (Jesse), along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
A proud graduate of Prince George's County Schools, Mel dedicated over 20 years to Washington Gas Light Co., where he worked as a chauffeur and later as a painter.
Mel was renowned for his infectious laughter and his remarkable ability to bring joy to any gathering. He had a unique gift for evoking genuine belly laughs, brightening even the darkest days. As the big brother, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it was giving a ride in a snowstorm or assisting with home projects. His gentle spirit and protective nature made his sisters feel cherished and safe.
Mel’s humor was often accompanied by heartfelt wisdom. He offered advice without judgment, always paired with a playful grin that could spark joy and laughter. His sincerity provided comfort and reassurance to those around him.
A firm believer in the power of laughter, Mel had a magical way of lighting up any room. Once the music started at a gathering, he was typically the first to dance and often the last to leave. A self-taught drummer, he filled his home with the rhythm of a makeshift "plastic bucket," creating joyful melodies that echoed late into the night. His love for music, especially his favorite group, Parliament Funkadelic, led him to concerts across the United States and the Caribbean.
An artist at heart, Mel’s creativity was evident in the vibrant cartoon drawings that adorned his bedroom walls, each character bursting with life and energy.
Mel’s kindness and gentle demeanor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He never met a stranger and was known for his generosity, often stopping to share change with those in need during his walks to work. When asked why he gave to the homeless, he simply replied, “We have to give them a little help.”
Mel will be deeply missed but will forever remain in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. His legacy of laughter, kindness, and creativity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A visitation for Melvin will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment is private.
