On January 10, 2024, Dorothy Marie Freed of Bowie, Maryland passed away at the age of ninety-seven. Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Bernard J. Freed; devoted mother of Bonnie J. O'Neill (John), Sharon E. Freed, Janice M. Freed, the late Dr. Stephen P. Cafferty, Deborah A. Freed-Gentzel (Ken), Bernard J. Freed, Jr. (Joann), Pamela J. Freed-Egan, Marilyn F. Allen, Thomas M. Freed (Debbie) Jennifer L. Burns, Jacqueline P. Proctor (Stanley), and the late John A. Freed.
Dorothy was Born on September 18, 1926, in Providence, Rhode Island and was the daughter of the late Martin J. and Mary E. Mullooly. She was predeceased by her brother John Mullooly (Lorraine) and Ann Hassett (Walter). She is survived by twenty-two grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, her sister Marjorie Murphy (Joseph) and Cousin Dermott Mullooly (Ita); Cyril Mullooly (Deirdre), Paddy Mullooy (May), Doreen Johnson (Gabriel) in Ireland, and Ursula Grahame in Brisbane Australia (widowed of Tom) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy attended Bryant College where she was a member of Sigma Iota Beta. She graduated in 1947 with a Secretarial degree. She married Bernard J. Freed on August 28th, 1948, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Providence, Rhode Island. Dorothy and Bernard lived in Rhode Island until 1961 and in that year, they moved their family of seven children to Okinawa Japan. They spent two years in Okinawa before they moved to Bowie Maryland in 1963. After moving to Bowie, they had five additional children and lovingly raised their twelve children remaining in Bowie for the next sixty years. Dorothy was a member of St. Pius X Church and a devoted parishioner. Upon graduation from high school from St. Patrick’s Academy in Providence, Dorothy worked at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a U.S. intelligence agency and the forerunner of the modern CIA in Washington DC. Dorothy also worked at Bowie State University in Bowie Maryland and the Department of Agriculture in DC and Beltsville Maryland. Dorothy also volunteered for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in Bowie Maryland.
Dorothy loved to travel and was proud of her Catholic pilgrimages to The Marin Shrine of Medjugorje and Lourdes among her many other travel destinations visiting all but two continents in her lifetime. Dorothy loved being around friends and family and enjoyed her long life until the very end. She was happiest when she was in the company of any of her twelve children, twenty-two grandchildren or eleven great grandchildren or friends. She enjoyed the simple things in life and appreciated each new day to the fullest.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Dorothy’s life by attending Mass at St. Pius the X Church in Bowie Maryland on Friday January 19, 2024, to begin at 11:00 am The link to join for those not attending is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHPzh-OiYgE&authuser=0 , the Mass will be presided by Father Robert Walsh.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Atreeum at Soaring Timbers 610 North Bestgate Road Annapolis Maryland 21401 on the corner of Dubois Road from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
A family only viewing will be held at Evans Funeral Home in Bowie Maryland on Saturday January 20, 2024, followed by Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
