Born 24 August 1930, passed away very gently from complications arising from a blood disorder, Myelodysplasia or MDS on August 8th, 16 days short of his 86th birthday.
Angelo (Angie) was the 3rd of 4 children of Domenico Antonio D’Annessa and Maria Giuseppa DeFelice in Youngstown, Ohio. Angelo was the 1st born in the US as his older brother, Amil (Mig) and Sophie were born in a small town in Barrea, Italy. Angelo is survived by his younger brother, Samuel who is currently in a VA hospital in Ohio.
Education: Youngstown Elementary, Hillman Jr. High and South High School. He then attended and graduated from The University of Akron, where he graduated with a BS in Education.
Military career: He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force in 1954 and served Active duty till 1956. From 1956 thru 1967 he was Active Reserves and resigned in 1968 as a Air Weapons Controller-Fighter A/C with the final rank as Captain in the USAF.
Sports: In high school he excelled in football and track. He was awarded Mahoning County All County, Youngstown All City and the All Star team for Youngstown. He accepted a full scholarship to run track and play football for the University of Akron, The Akron Zips.
On August 2, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Sara Host.
They had (2) children, Thomas (1955) and Michael (1958).

Angelo had various jobs at a young age. As an (11) year old he was a Pin Boy in an Bowling alley, also worked with a Fruit Vendor and helped paint a water tower with his brother on a farm. At the age of (12) he was a Golf Caddy at the local Golf Club. From (15-17) he was a grocery clerk with the Rulli Bros stores.
Other various jobs from 1950 thru 1959: Pit Crew at the Akron Dirt Track; Volunteer at the Akron Children’s Home later to be the Dept. Head; Director of Children’s Home in Albany, NY. (they had (30) children; Grocery Store Mgr.
Major career change that became his passion, the NASA Space Program.
1959-1966 joined Vitro Corp, a Govt. contractor in Eglin AFB as the Air Weapons Controller, 1961 became the Site D4 Ops Mgr. for the missile test range.
1966-1984 Joined NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. where he held the following positions: Requirements Officer for the Manned Space Flight Networks for Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle. Section Chief for Documentation and Data. Chairman, GSFC Manned Flight Awareness Panel.
1985 Transferred to NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. There he worked on the Shuttle Mission Requirements program. Program Mgr. and Chairman of the Manned Flight Awareness Panel, which was changed to SFA in 1996.
He was the Manager of the Space Shuttle Challenger Action Center which reviewed the accident and published the findings. Remember O-rings.
He served on the Accident Emergency Unit at each shuttle launch.
1988 Started including the International Space Station into the Space Flight Awareness Program.
Other activities: Little League Baseball in Dunedin, Fla. Served as a Coach, Manager and was on the Board of Directors. New Carrollton Boys/Girls Club: Coach, Commissioner of Football, Board of Directors. Parkdale High School Original founder (with two others) of the Booster Club and served on the board of directors. He also was the team photographer (super 8 movies) that the team used for review.
He was also a member of the Elks Lodge Lions Club.
Hobbies he enjoyed included photography, coin collecting, golf and skiing.
He enjoyed the building projects such as building a home in Clearwater, Fla., additions to the Cabin (two rooms and a roller skating size covered deck and just all the “handyman” labor in general.
The Glenn Dale United Methodist Church was a very special “family” for both Angelo and Sara Dannessa and Angelo was a Trustee, usher and cemetery committee member.
He is survived by his two sons, Thomas (Donna) of Severna Park and Michael of Port Charlotte, FL and four grandchildren, Brian and Gina, and David and Sara Jane, two great grandchildren Peyton and Brooke.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 21st, 2016 @ 3:00PM - Glenn Dale United Methodist Church 8500 Springfield Rd, Glenn Dale, MD 20769
