POCASSET: Phyllis Irene (Hurley) McDonough, age 94, a long time resident of Pocasett, died peacefully at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham on March 17, 2023. She was surrounded by the loving embrace of her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Patrick J. McDonough.
Born on March 30, 1928 in Medford, she was the daughter of the late John and Loretta (Burns)Hurley. The path of her life was shaped by her family and her faith. After graduating from Medford High School in1948, she spent time as a Postulant in the Sisters of Notre Dame. She ultimately left the order and began working at the telephone company, where through friends she met her future husband Patrick. They were married on May 21,1955. They had seven beautiful children who remained the center of her life. From the unconditional love, support and guidance she provided a strong base from which each child was able to shine.
Later in life she pursed nursing and received her LPN Nursing license in 1974. During her career she worked at Cardinal Cushing Hospital in Brockton and after moving to Pocasset she continued as a nurse at Falmouth Hospital until her retirement. She was very active at St John the Evangelist Church as a Eucharistic Minister, a volunteer and a member of the Women’s Guild.
Phyllis will be greatly missed by her seven children; Mary L. McDonough and her husband Peter, Patrick J. McDonough and his wife Sandra, Brian S. McDonough and his partner Karen, Terence J. McDonough and his wife Janice, Kerry T. McDonough and his wife Donna, Barry S. McDonough and Maura Benhakuma; eleven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She also will be missed by her loving sister Mildred Thompson and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by ten siblings.
Friends and family are invited to gather for visiting hours on Monday March 27, 2023 from 4pm - 7pm and Tuesday March 28,2023 from 8am - 9:30am at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, Bourne MA. The funeral mass will be on March 28, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 841 Shore Rd, Pocasset MA; followed by the internment at the National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:30 pm.
