George H. Howard, age 83, retired attorney, of Pocasset, formerly of Yarmouthport, Quincy, Braintree and Westwood, MA, passed away on March 20, 2016. For many years, Mr. Howard practiced with his partner, Joseph Clancy, in the law firm, Howard & Clancy. He was extremely well respected by his professional colleagues and clients.
Mr. Howard was the husband of the late Barbara C. (Mont) Howard, a registered nurse, for 52 years, and is survived by three terrific children, Attorney Robert M. Howard and his partner Jacqueline Gaussen of San Diego, CA, Susan C. Bruce of Rockland, MA and Attorney Beth Ann Timson and her husband Attorney Christopher G. Timson of Walpole, MA. Mr. Howard is also survived by eight outstanding grandchildren, Rebecca, William and Michael Timson, Nicholas, Samantha and Jonathan Bruce, and Ryder and Riley Gaussen-Howard.
Mr. Howard was born and grew up in Gardner and Templeton MA, the son of Earl R. and Lillian A. (Daly) Howard and is also survived by his sisters Ann J. Beaudet of Concord, CA, Earlene M. Dickson of E. Templeton, MA and Sheila Couture of Templeton, MA. His sister, Patricia Van Dorn, and brothers, John R. Howard and Albert T. Howard, predeceased him.
Graduating from Gardner High School in 1950, Fitchburg State College in 1954 and the New England School of Law in 1960, Mr. Howard practiced trial law for thirty years in Boston, Westwood and Norwood, MA. He was a former Assistant District Attorney in Norfolk County and President of the Quincy Bar Association and the Bar Association of Norfolk County, where he was named Massachusetts Lawyer of the Year for his pro-bono work on behalf of cancer victims who were denied insurance coverage by insurance companies. He often said it was his favorite professional obligation and was proud of the fact that he had never lost one of these important cases. He was an avid hunter, skier and sailor aboard his sloop "Old Howard".
Following college graduation, Mr. Howard served in the U.S. Army, having volunteered for the draft and was stationed in Thule Greenland during the Korean Conflict.
There will be a wake at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, Pocasset on Saturday, March 26 from 2-5 p.m., with a Mass in celebration of his life at St. John the Evangelist Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset on Monday March 28 at 10:00 a.m. Internment will be private at the St. John Cemetery in Gardner, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that a donation be made in George and Barbara Howard's memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Mr. Howard asked that his death notice include that he wishes to particularly thank all of his wonderful family and many old law associates, judges, court personnel and many dear friends for being a part of his wonderful and very happy life. He wished to say that he and his beloved wife, Barbara, look forward to seeing each of you all again at a much, much later time in a much, much better place and cocktails will be on him.
