POCASSET - Fred Wheeler passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024 at age 96. Fred was born on October 6, 1927 in Worcester, MA. He got a BA and BS from Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, his MEd from Miami University, in Oxford, OH, and his 6th year Certificate in Education from UCONN in Storrs, CT. He was a public school teacher for his entire career, and was Director of Vocational Education in the Watertown, CT Public School District. After WWII he was involved in reconstruction work in Italy under the auspices of American Friends Service Committee, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. Before his retirement he was active in Hartford Monthly Meeting, the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends, and Friends Camp in China, Maine.
In 1949 Fred and Dorothy Wheeler were married and they spent 74 years together, raising their family in Watertown, Connecticut and then retiring to Pocasset, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After retirement they enjoyed spending winters in Zephyrhills, FL. Fred enjoyed boating, camping, painting, drawing, woodwork, and whittling. In recent years he loved walking in his neighborhood near Hen Cove, talking to neighbors, and watching the birds and cars out the picture window.
Fred is survived by his wife Dorothy (Carpenter), his sister Faith Wheeler (Bill Hellert), his children Esther Wheeler (Sean True), Clark Wheeler (Shelley), Beth Carlson, and Anne McAuliffe (Gerard); and his grandchildren Kristen Wheeler, Samuel & William True, Jeffrey, Matthew & Emily Carlson, and Rachel, Hannah & Lia McAuliffe. He was predeceased by his brother, Edwin Wheeler (Nancy Ives).
A celebration of life will be held privately at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bourne Food Pantry, 121 Main St, Bourne, MA 03532.
