Bourne - Edward “Tim” Shay passed on peacefully in his beloved Pocasset home surrounded by the people he most loved.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts his family relocated to Bourne when Tim was in high school. Upon graduating from Bourne High School in 1956 he attended the Mass Maritime Academy where he received a BS in seamanship and navigation in 1960. While working as an officer aboard ship, Tim met Mary Hazel Dolan who was taking a cruise out of CA during her summer break from teaching, thus beginning a whirl-wind romance and deep-devoted love affair lasting until Mary’s passing in 2016. Tim and Mary built a home in Pocasset in 1966 where they spent virtually their entire married life. Tim was kind and generous, and above all lovingly devoted to Mary and son William E. Shay of Bourne.
Unwilling to be away from his bride, Tim left his life at sea and obtained his MS in Education from Bridgewater State College and began a teaching career in 1965 - much of the time teaching math to middle school students on Otis ANGB and later Bourne Middle School. Tim was one of the early adopters of computer technology in the classroom. Although he loved the sea, teaching was Tim’s true calling and he served as an educator, role-model and mentor to some 3,520 students over 37 years.
In retirement, Tim enjoyed taking many cruises with Mary, taking trips with family and friends, boating with his son, gardening, woodworking, and computers.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, February 8th at the Saint John's Church, Pocasset, MA at 10:00am. Please refer to the obituary on www.nickersonbournefuneralhome.com. Private Interment in Bourne Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tim's memory to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption or similar adoption charity.
