Clarence Joseph “Sweeney” Boucher of Bourne, MA passed away peacefully on October 27, 2022 surrounded by family. He was 93-years-old, and the loving husband of Beatrice A. (Bousquet) Boucher for 67 years.
Sweeney was the youngest of 9 children, and a 1947 Brockton High graduate. After attending U.S. Navy Optical School, he served aboard the U.S.S. Cascade during the Korean War. He owned Boucher Opticians of Brockton and proudly served generations of local families. He was a member of the Guild Opticians of America and Contact Lens Society of New England, a Fellow in the National Academy of Opticians, and Board Member of the Mass. Hearing Aid Society.
Sweeney raised his 7 children in Easton, MA and was a founding member of Holy Cross Church. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Brockton, member of the Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Economic Development at Stonehill College, and Board of Directors of The Community Bank.
Sweeney retired to Bourne where he was an active member of St John The Evangelist Church, serving as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and the Saint Vincent DePaul Society. He was a lifelong “do-it-yourselfer” who enjoyed doing projects at home and for his family. An avid bowler and golfer, he enjoyed playing with fellow members of Halifax Country Club and Falcon Golf Course.
Sweeney is survived by his wife Beatrice, and children Betsy (Chris) Kowal of Chepachet, RI; Dan (M.J. Babinec) Boucher of Weeki Wachee, FL, Cathy (James) Zarrella of Gettysburg, PA; Peggy (Brian) Mullen of New Smyrna Beach, FL; Amy Howland of Davenport, FL; and Tim (Beth) Boucher of Canton, MA. His son Tom of Worcester, MA passed away in July. “Papa” was beloved by his eleven Grandchildren and five Great-Grandchildren, his pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother Ray Boucher of Pocasset.
A wake will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne on Thursday, November 3rd from 8:30am to 9:30am, followed by a 10:00am Funeral Mass at St. John’s in Pocasset. He will be buried at Bourne National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society.
