Walter was born October 17, 1951 in Wichita Falls TX and died unexpectedly on March 10, 2020 in Boulder Colorado.He is survived by his mother Sarah Krog, and siblings Patti and Steve.He was preceded in death by his father Donald Krog and sister Nancy.
Walter moved to Boulder in 1957 with his family who settled in North Boulder. He attended school at Columbine Elementary, Centennial Jr. High and Boulder High School. He was chemistry student of the year his Senior year in high school. He received an academic scholarship to Rice University in Houston TX. He attended Rice for 2 years before transferring to the University of Colorado Boulder where he completed his B.S. in Geology.
Walter was a Boy Scout with Troop 75 in Boulder. He participated in summer and winter hiking, camping and other activities, eventually achieving the rank of Star Scout.
He was an accomplished marksman. From Jr. High on he competed in NRA sanctioned target matches using .22 caliber at 50 feet indoors and 50 and 100 yards outdoors. Walter was a member of the Boulder Rifle Club Juniors program. He achieved his NRA Distinguished Experts rating at age 18.
He was an active mountain and rock climber early in his life. He went on Summer and Winter climbs and participated in practice rescue operations with the Rocky Mountain Rescue group.
Walter's great passion in life was bicycling. He did some racing early on and was a talented bicycle mechanic. He worked at several bike shops in Boulder as a mechanic and later worked for several professional racing teams including the 7-Eleven women's team, Weight Watchers, and TGI Fridays in the 1980's. He also participated in regular group rides and more challenging rides including century rides (100 miles).
Walter will be missed.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life as soon as is feasible in these trying times.
