Jack Layton, 76, of Boulder, Colorado died peacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at Boulder Community Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Jack, son of Lois and Jack Layton, was born in Iowa City, Iowa on July 19, 1946. He grew up in Iowa City, graduating from Iowa City High School in 1964. After briefly attending the University of Iowa, Jack joined the U. S. Army and served in the Vietnam conflict.
During his high school summers, Jack had worked at the Ride-A-Kart in Estes Park. So upon his discharge from the Army he knew Colorado was the place he wanted to spend the rest of his life. He settled in Boulder, where he was forever after known as “Snake”. During the summers Snake could be found working behind the bar at The Wheel in Estes Park, and in the winters he worked at various bars and restaurants in Boulder, until his retirement.
Due to his fun-loving, congenial character and loyalty, Snake developed a wide group of friends who were like family to him. Together they shared a lifetime of experiences, adventures, and escapades. He appreciated their unwavering friendship and they knew they could always count on Snake.
In spite of his love for Colorado, he remained especially close to a number of his Iowa City friends and continued to be a faithful Hawkeye fan.
Jack is survived by his sister, Mary Cilek, and her husband, Tom; his nephew, Benjamin Cilek; his niece, Sara Field, and her husband, Joshua, along with their children Anna, Elizabeth, and Luke.
A celebration of life is being planned for later this summer in Boulder. Additional information will be available at dignitymemorial.com where you may share remembrances of Jack/Snake, our brother, uncle, friend.
