Dean was born on July 11, 1922 to John S. Callan and Agnes Armstrong in Odell, NE. He earned his diploma from Odell High School in 1939 and went on to the University of Nebraska, where he was a letter winner in baseball and the president of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Dean worked at the Callan Hardware and Implement/Callan Farms in Odell with his father and brother. He served as president of the Nebraska Hardware Association. After the war he played for the Odell Independents which was a semi-pro baseball team in Nebraska.
His military service included earning the rank of Staff Sargent in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. He also served in the 156th Army Airways Communications Squadron as the Control Tower Operator at Hendricks Field, FL and Wideawake Airfield, Ascension Islands.
In the fall of 1951 while ironically attending a Nebraska-Colorado football game he met his future wife Mary Ann Lindauer. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day in 1953 and were married on August 2, 1953 in Omaha, NE.
In 1963, Dean founded the Dean Callan & Company in Boulder, CO. His work with the company was noted in the book “Boulder County: An Illustrated History” as one that helped shape Boulder’s future. Dean had a reputation for integrity and honesty and was an integral part of Boulder’s significant real estate transactions during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Dean was a board member of several organizations including Security Bank of Boulder, Colorado National Bank of Boulder, Boulder Community Hospital, Frasier Meadows Manor and Boulder Senior Center. He was also president of the Boulder Buff Club. Dean was also a member of the Free Masons, Shriners and Mountain View United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Boulder Country Club. Some of his favorite past-times included watching his children and grandchildren perform in sporting events and music.
His family was always the most important and he was never shy about providing words of advice and encouragement.
Survivors include his children Dave (Carol) and their children Greg and Tom; Scott (Myra) and their children Lisa, Liz and Gina, and grandchildren Beth, Ricky, Ryan, Katie, Brendan; Becky (Bruce) and their children Beau and Berkley. Other survivors include sister-in-law Joyce Callan and brother and sister-in-law John and Cathy Lindauer. He was preceded in death by wife Mary Ann in 2006 and brother Clair in 2005.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 355 Ponca Place Boulder, CO 80303. A Celebration of Life will follow from 3:00 – 5:00 at Carelli’s restaurant in Boulder. Contributions may be made in Dean’s honor to Boulder Community Hospital Auxiliary or Frasier Meadows Retirement Center-Wellness Center.
