Carolyn Maxwell

Carolyn H. Maxwell, a resident of Boulder since the early 1950’s, passed away November 4, 2011 at Manor Care Health Center. She was born on March 4, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA to Edson S. and Caroline C. Harris. She was the youngest of four children.

Carolyn was a noted pianist, playing for weddings and other events in the Boulder area. She was a beloved teacher to many local young people who benefitted from her innovative style of teaching. Carolyn was the creator and publisher of the Maxwell Music Evaluation series of books that introduced classical composers to piano teachers and students in an exciting and vibrant manner. Her work included files and notebooks which evaluated teaching materials. Carolyn frequently attended the Aspen Music Festival. She served as president of both the Boulder Area Music Teachers and the Colorado State Music Teachers Associations.

Carolyn was very active on the early Boulder Open Space Board. In the 1990’s she wrote the city’s pamphlet “Sidewalks for Seniors”, a guide to local walking trips. As a young mother, she led Cub Scout, Campfire Girls, and various 4-H groups. Carolyn participated in the Boulder Community Hospital Auxiliary and started its Candy Striper program. For eight years she owned and operated the KOA Camp Ground east of Boulder.

Carolyn’s love of animals was legendary. She trained her final pet, a golden retriever, to be a therapy dog so that he could accompany her as she pursued her various interests in the Boulder area. Carolyn was involved in many other community activities throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker).

Carolyn was predeceased by her parents and her older siblings Marion H. (Philip) Churchill of St. Simons Island, GA, Eileen H. (Edgar) Emerson of Boulder and Edson (Virginia) Harris of Phoenix, AZ.

Carolyn is survived by her former husband, Dr. George S. Maxwell and their four children: Kim Maxwell and Gail Maxwell of California, Joan Lenox of Arizona and Steve Maxwell of Oregon; grandchildren Karen, Leah, and Sarah as well as five great-grandchildren. Carolyn is also survived by many nieces and nephews, some of whom live in the Boulder/Denver area.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made through Crist Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association c/o Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301.
