Maureen Carol Twomey

Maureen (Burke) Twomey, of Boston’s Back Bay, formerly of Lynnfield and Malden, died peacefully on April 2, 2016, after battling cancer for over two years. She was 72. Throughout these past two years, Maureen never let her illness define her; she maintained her great sense of humor and zest for life. Maureen was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Burke, sister of Janice Bonfiglioli, and grew up in Malden, where she met her future husband Lee Twomey. Lee and Maureen recently celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage. She was the loving mother to their three children: daughter Jill Stewart and husband Brad of Wellesley, sons Chris Twomey and wife Nicole of Wenham, and Jason Twomey and wife Melissa of Washington, DC. She was the adored grandmother of nine grandchildren: Connor, Ben and Nate Stewart, Annabella, Eliza, and Luke Twomey, Olivia, Hannah, and William Twomey. She is also survived by sister in law Joan Morris, along with three nieces and a nephew. Throughout her life, Maureen possessed a love of reading and learning; she graduated with distinction from Tufts and Harvard University. Her interests were varied; she enjoyed playing bridge, painting, visiting museums, theater trips to NYC, and the NY Times crossword puzzle. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her grandchildren. Maureen also loved to travel, and she and Lee planned many trips to include their children and their spouses, and grandchildren; those vacations and many more wonderful and often hilarious memories with Grandma/”Monty” will be cherished forever. Our family is thankful for all the love and support family and friends have shown us. We are also grateful to oncologist Dr. Peter Enzinger and Mike Casey, NP, and the staff at the Center for Esophageal and Gastric Cancer at Dana Farber, for their excellent care of Maureen while she was being treated for this devastating disease. A heartfelt thank you also to the doctors and nurses at both Dana Farber and Brigham and Women’s Hospital for their compassionate care of Maureen. A celebration of Maureen’s life will be held on Saturday, April 16th at 11:00 at St. Cecilia Parish, 18 Belvidere Street, Boston, reception immediately following. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
