James V. Young

James V. Young, of Charlestown, MA, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018 at the age of 76. Born in Clifton Springs, NY on July 1, 1941, he was the oldest son of the late George and Emily (Worden) Young. Jim spent his childhood years in upstate New York before moving to the Boston area. Jim earned an A.B. degree in Economics in 1963 from Harvard College and an MBA in 1965 from Harvard Business School. He came to love the City of Boston and made it his home for much of his life. He proudly served as the City’s Treasurer and Deputy Mayor through the 1970s under the late Honorable Kevin H. White during Boston’s unprecedented financial crisis. Following his public service, he served for many years as CFO at Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, and subsequently in various management capacities in the real estate finance sector. Jim contributed his financial expertise to several other Boston organizations, serving as founder, Board member, and CFO of the Friends of Post Office Square, Treasurer and member of the Board of Governors of the Harvard Club of Boston, and Trustee of the Boston Public Library.

Jim was an avid doubles squash player, competing at the national level in his age group and locally at the Harvard Club. He sailed extensively in New England and the Caribbean. He also loved tennis, travel, scuba diving, reading, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Karen Linsley, of Charlestown, MA; daughter Jocelyn Young and son-in-law Robin Foster of Lebanon, ME; and brother George Young and sister-in-law Pam Young, of Novelty, OH. He will be fondly remembered for his strength of character, intelligence, generosity, and dry sense of humor. He is dearly missed by his family and many good friends.

Jim and Karen adopted and spoiled many rescue cats over the years from a Rhode Island rescue organization. Donations may be made in Jim’s name to PawsWatch Cat Rescue (PO Box 7005, Warwick, RI, 02887).

Plans for a memorial service to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date.
