Joseph Carter

Joseph Clyde Carter, Jr., 87, passed peacefully to his heavenly home on January 4th, at Landmark Nursing Home in Booneville. Born February 23, 1929 to the late Clyde and Agnes Carter, Joe was an Eagle Scout, a 1946 graduate and football Letterman of Booneville High School and a Mississippi State University Alumni of the Class of 1951. At State he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army ROTC and served in Germany during the Korean War. Mr. Carter continued his military service in the National Guard and served as Company Commander of Booneville’s Company B 198th Tank Battalion of the 31st Infantry Division from 1956 to 1962. He retired a Major in 1973.

Joe’s business career started with his father at the Clyde Carter Lumber Company after returning from active duty in the Army. Later while working for Gulf States Manufacturing, Joe lived in Starkville, Mississippi and Conroe, Texas. Before moving back to Booneville in 2003, Joe also resided in Memphis, Tennessee while working with Rose Construction Company.

Joe was a former member of the Booneville Jaycees, the Booneville Rotary Club, the Starkville Kiwanis Club and a Charter member of the Tiger Den Coffee Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church Booneville joining in 1936 and at First Baptist Starkville. He served as Deacon and taught Sunday school.

Survivors include Mary Evelyn (Michael) Carter, his wife of 65 years; daughter Marilyn Mittelman of Greensboro, North Carolina; and three sons; Jed Carter of Booneville, Jeff (Paula) Carter of Dallas, Texas and John (Karen) Carter of Conifer, Colorado. Five grandchildren include Matt, Lindsay and Ashley Mittleman; Jake and Cole Carter; and four great-grandchildren Kendra, Cady, Lily and Theo. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Catherine Carter Stephens.

Pallbearers include; Scott Stephens, Walter Moore, Mike Kemp, Don Williams, Dr. Erik Dukes, Jason Yarber, J.W. Jennings, and David West. Billy Ward is honorary pallbearer. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at McMillan Funeral Home. Services will be held 10 am at First Baptist Church, 401 W Church Street, Booneville on Saturday, January 7th Dr. Lynn Jones and Bro. Jason Reed officiating. Services are under the direction of McMillan Funeral Home.
