Victor Cortez

Victor Cortez was born on November 21st and entered into Heaven to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 21st, 2022. He was born in Shiner, Texas, where he loved playing baseball growing up. He was an excellent player and was given the nickname “Tiger” from his teammates. As a young man, he entered the U. S. Navy and served 4 years on active duty, deploying to the Western Pacific on the USS Piedmont (AD-17). Upon completion of military service, he settled in Chula Vista, CA and continued to serve his country in federal civil service for the Department of Defense for 45 years.

Vic, as he was known by family and friends, loved sports, enjoyed traveling with his wife, keeping up on world events and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Vic leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Rosemary Cortez. Left to cherish his memories are his sons, James and Gregory Cortez; daughter, Jennifer Cortez; daughters-in-law, Rosalina Cortez and Mary Cortez; grandson, Liam Cortez; granddaughters, Kristina Accos and Lyla Cortez. Additionally, he will be remembered by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends from around the country. Vic also loved and cared for his furry family members: Coco and Muffin, and grand dogs: Sheila, Shiner, Cody, Mador, Nemo, Charlotte and Waffles.

His favorite pastimes were watching CNN, true crimes series and cheering on his favorite football team, the Oakland Raiders. He also loved reading John Grisham novels about crime. In true crime fashion, he also loved monitoring police and fire department scanners. Vic loved visiting his favorite taco shop La India Bonita, for rolled tacos and he also adored sweets, especially See’s candy lollipops and Moose Crunch. He regularly visited Yum Yum’s for donuts and would order a raisin roll and a coffee. He looked forward to reading the newspaper each morning with his cup of coffee. He loved old western music, so naturally Willies roadhouse always played in his car and garage. You would often find Vic in his garage tinkering or fixing just about anything. He always had batteries readily available for his grandkid’s toys. Vic collected toy cars and a Furbi that he displayed proudly in his garage alongside other treasured knickknacks. Vic had a great sense of humor and was such a kind and loving person. He will be truly missed by all that were lucky to know him.

Visitation and Rosary will be on December 13th from 4-8PM at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary in the Little Chapel of Roses. Funeral services will be on December 15th, beginning with mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 11:00 am. Burial service will be at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary at 12:30 pm. Immediately following, will be a celebration of life at the Little Lodge, also at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary.
