Robert McKenzie Abrigo (age 86) a devoted husband, a loving father, and a dedicated Navy veteran, peacefully passed away on August 6, 2023, at Jacobs Medical Center – UCSD, San Diego, California. He was born on June 4, 1937, in Manila, Philippines, and grew up in Baguio as the eldest of seven siblings.
At the age of 18, Robert embarked on a remarkable journey by joining the United States Navy. Over a span of 30 years (22 active and 8 with the Department of Defense), he rose to the prestigious rank of E9 - Master Chief Petty Officer, Boiler Technician, becoming the first Filipino BTCM in the history of the Navy. His dedication and bravery led him to serve in the Vietnam War, where he was honored with The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (Gallantry Cross) for his exceptional service.
Robert's commitment to service extended beyond the Navy. After his military career, he embarked on a successful journey in the field of real estate, eventually becoming a licensed broker. His prowess as a salesman at A.L. Williams was a testament to his industrious spirit.
An avid traveler, Robert and the love of his life, Beatriz, explored the world together, from the Philippines, to Japan, to the United States, to Rome, to Egypt, to Mexico, and beyond. Their shared adventures were a testament to their enduring bond. Robert Abrigo and Beatriz Tolentino were married for an inspiring 62 years, exemplifying a beacon of love, strength, and companionship.
In addition to his military and professional accomplishments, Robert was a pillar of strength in his community. He was an active member of St. Rita's Church in San Diego since 1967, serving as a eucharistic minister and was a supporter of the Filipino American community. His kindness, patience, intelligence, and unwavering determination were admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
His legacy lives on through his devoted family, including his loving spouse Beatriz Tolentino Abrigo, his daughters: Jacqueline Abrigo-Harbison, Kathleen Abrigo-Sarangay, Beatrice Abrigo Kimble, and Amelia Villanueva, his grandchildren: John Christopher Oblinger, Steven Sarangay, Camille Kimble Hofstrand, Candice Sarangay, Sophia Kimble, Johnathan Robert Caceres, and his great-grandchildren: Jaden Oblinger, Myles Oblinger, Jaxson Burgos, and Joaquin Tabarez.
Robert McKenzie Abrigo, a tenacious fighter who battled cancer for two years, has now found eternal rest. As he reunites with loved ones who preceded him in death, including his granddaughter Jessica Tabarez and a son-in-law Christopher Sarangay, we remember his remarkable journey and the lasting impact he made on all who had the honor of crossing his path.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, may we find solace in the knowledge that he has finally found the peace he so richly deserves, resting in the arms of the Lord.
