Jesus Abadam Giron was born on October 15, 1930 in Amungan, Iba Zambales, Philippines. He was born to Ziolo Giron and Agapita Abadam. He was the youngest of five children, the brother of Alfredo Giron, and the late Sevilla Tamares, Juana Edraisa, and Angelina de la Cruz.
While visiting Olongapo City, Zambales, his eyes caught the beauty of Cristina Dumayas at a local restaurant. The two fell in love and got married on January 6, 1953. Jesus and Cristina eventually started a family and raised five children together.
In September 1957, Jesus enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed his boot camp at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California now called Liberty Station. He served for over 20 years as a Marine Electrician aboard the submarines, USS Sperry, USS Gudgeon, and USS Pigeon.
Missing his family, Jesus petitioned them to come to the United States in October of 1969. Jesus and his family reunited when he was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. His final orders was to be transferred to San Diego, California where he retired in March 1977. He also started his second career at NASSCO and later retired in 1992. He was among the first officers of the “Amungan, Iba, Zambales Association,” as Sargent of Arms. One of Jesus’ biggest passions was betting on the horse races. After mastering the “right handicapping of horse racing,” it finally paid off…on a Good Friday, April 17, 1992…Jesus hit the only winning Pick-9 ticket from the off-track betting of Santa Anita Racetrack. The winning jackpot was $220,000.00+, the biggest payoff in horse racing that year.
In 1993, Jesus and Cristina moved to Kingman, Arizona where they enjoyed their golden years. His early years in Arizona involved spending time in his garden (emphasis on calabasa, talong, talbos kamote, and grapes), raising chickens, and champion fighting roosters. At least three times a week, he and Cristina would make the 45 minute drive to Laughlin, Nevada where they spent together side by side in the sports book center as they watched and placed bets on the ponies. They always looked forward to visits from family members and would not hesitate to take them to Laughlin and treat them to a hotel room and buffet.
When Cristina began to struggle with various health problems, Jesus became her primary caregiver. He tenderly cared for her until her last breathe, when the love of his life for 58 years died in his arms while preparing for her doctor appointment. Jesus’ core values consisted of God, love, and family. He loved the Lord and his family for 82 years. He committed his love and his life for the joy of family.
On July 29th, around 10:50 a.m., Jesus peacefully left this world and went home with the Lord, Jesus Christ. His love and kindness that he shared with his friends and family shall last forever. He leaves his children William, Norma, Raquel, Joseph, and Gerry; his step-sons; Arturo and Hilario, his brother, Alfredo; his precious grandchildren; Ashley, Jason, Josel, Wesley, Justin, Joshua, Jeremy, Kael, Emmanuel, and Isaiah; daughter-in-laws; Ligaya, Nena, Nida, and Maya.
Jesus inspired us all in many ways. His legacy shall live on in all of us for the rest of our lives. He is safe now in our Lord’s loving arms. He has fought the good fight. He has finished the race. He has kept the faith!
“…My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together”. (Psalm 34:2-3)
