Henry Castillo Gonzales

Henry Castillo Gonzales was born in Aklan, Philippines on February 16, 1934. He was the third of 6 children born to Evangelista & Marcela Gonzales.

Life in the Philippines at that time was not easy. Because of this, once he reached adulthood, he began seeking better opportunities. He decided to join the U.S. Navy and moved his new family to the United States. He proudly served and dedicated 20 years of his life to the Navy before retiring in 1974. Another passion of his was working with his hands and drawing. After retiring from the service, he attended college classes to become a draftsman, necessary in architectural drawing and design. He worked 20 years in this field as well.

Throughout his career and after retirement, one of the things he absolutely loved to do was cook, mainly Filipino dishes and desserts. Whether it was for family, church or other community gatherings, he always wanted to help out with his cooking prowess. He was especially happy to prepare food for his granddaughters and great grandchildren. Over the years, he became very involved in the Filipino community with various organizations here in southern California in an effort to promote and keep Filipino traditions alive. When he wasn’t cooking, he spent much of his time building and repairing things around the home. Additionally, he spent countless hours nurturing various plants and trees around the yard not only for their aesthetic beauty, but also to enjoy the fruits and vegetables produced.

With heavy hearts, he left us on April 6, 2022, shortly after his 88th birthday. We miss him dearly! He is survived by his loving wife Adela, to whom he was married for nearly 63 wonderful years, three children Larry, Stella and Henry Jr, son-in-law Cruz Mireles Jr, 2 granddaughters Janelle Mireles Chavez (& husband Ricardo) and Alaina Mireles Lancaster (& husband Tyler) and 2 great grandchildren Thalia and Elias Chavez. One of his missions in life was to see that his entire family would be taken care of when he was called from this world by God. To that end, we say “Mission accomplished!”

This is a truly difficult time for our Family, but the outpouring of love and words of kindness and encouragement received from family and friends is greatly appreciated and comforting. Thank you all so much!
