Dolores Helene Cino Latimer, passed away peacefully with family by her side of February 21st, 2023. Dolores was an incredible woman and was able to experience and accomplish so much in her life. She touched the lives of countless people over many years. Most of all, she loved her family and focused on them, encouraging, and supporting their endeavors.
She was the daughter of Italian immigrants Nicholas and Rosa Cino, from Racalmuto, Sicily; born in Buffalo NY in 1936. After graduating high school, she enlisted in the U.S Army and was stationed at Ft. Lee Virginia for two years. Once her enlistment in the army was completed, she continued in government service and went to work for the U.S. State Department. Her work there was initially in Washington DC, but soon led her to travel all over the world. She worked in several embassies and consulates in Europe including Vienna and Berlin at the height of the Cold War.
Her work at the State Department eventually took her to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia where she met her future husband, Donald Latimer, who was in the US Navy and working at the US Embassy in Liberia as well. They were married in Liberia in June 1968. After their tour in Liberia was completed, they moved on to San Diego, Donald’s next duty station where they remained for the next 54 years.
During her first several years in San Diego she focused on raising her two sons, Andrew and Kris, with a great amount of love. Once her sons started school, she went back to work at the local elementary school, where of course she could keep an eye on them and be a part of their activities there. She continued to focus on her family, encouraging and supporting their endeavors. She worked almost 40 years at Boone elementary, initially as a volunteer, then as paid staff. In addition to the work at the school, she was active in volunteering at the local library and at St. Michael’s church and stayed busy in those endeavors until final few months.
Dolores is survived by her husband of 54 years Donald Latimer, her sons Kris Latimer, Andrew Latimer, Daughter-in-law Janice Latimer, and Nephew Peter Cino. She is preceded in death by her parents Nicholas and Rose Cino, and her siblings Gasper Cino, Mary Cino, and Nicholas Cino.
