Charles Smith, aka Chuck or Smitty, died June 7 at an El Cajon nursing facility at the age of 67. Born September 4, 1945 in Las Vegas, Nevada, he was a resident of the county 54 years, most recently living in Chula Vista.
He served with the U. S. Marine Corps as an aviation electrician from January 1965 to December 1968, including a tour with the VMCJ-3 unit in Da Nang, Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion Chapter 255 in National City.
He retired from Federal Civil Service after 23 years, most recently working as a High Voltage Electrician and Supervisor with the Navy Public Works Center at 32nd Street Naval Station.
He was a gun/hunting enthusiast and a strong supporter of our Second Amendment right to bear arms. This support included memberships with the National Rifle Association (NRA), the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Penny. Survivors include his daughter Tammy Martin (Chattanooga, Tennessee), son Charles J. and daughter-in-law Shelly Smith (El Cajon), brother James L. Smith (Lakeside), life partner Dr. Dora Lofstrom (National City), 3 grandchildren, 1 niece, 3 nephews, and 1 grand-nephew.
Graveside services will be held Monday June 17 at 1:30 pm at Glen Abbey Memorial Park under the direction of the Glen Abbey Mortuary.
