Everyone’s life is the sum total of all of the people they have met, the things they have done, the places they have gone. Alex Mancilla was no exception. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Alex will be remembered as a very exceptional person.
Alex’s life journey began on May 5, 1960. He first greeted the world in Mexicali, Mexico. His parents' names were Oscar Vargas Mancilla and Maria Rodriguez Mancilla. He was raised in Chula Vista, California with eleven siblings, Hector Mancilla, Elvia Mancilla Duran, Antonio Mancilla, Sylvia Mancilla Ortiz, Carmen Mancilla Parra, Robert Mancilla, Arthur Mancilla, George Mancilla, William Mancilla, Adriana Mancilla and Herman Mancilla+. Alex was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his family sharing many special life experiences over the years.
Alex was a typical teenager who had a fairly happy high school experience, making the critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. He graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1978. Throughout his high school years, Alex loved playing sports. He was a vital player for his high schools soccer team and helped them become CIF Champions. He was voted MVP in 1976.
Falling in love is a huge milestone for any person. Just knowing that you have met that special someone is a magical feeling. Alex experienced that with his sweetheart Sonya Velarde and the couple exchanged wedding vows on May 20, 1997. The wedding ceremony took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Empathic and loyal, Alex was committed to making his family happy.
While everything a person does in life contributes to who they grow into, it is ultimately this same person who holds the most influence on the next generation. Alex was blessed with seven children, Brandon Alexander+, Travis Richard, Oscar Javier, Melissa, Alexandra+, Byanca and Bryana. Alex worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs, raising his children in a positive and nurturing environment. Later in life, Alex was blessed with the gift of five grandchildren.
Seeing as athletics were always an important part of Alex’s life, he took much joy in becoming a great coach. He devoted much of his time coaching soccer and girls softball. He was known as an inspiration to his girls softball team, always encouraging them to do their best. He led his girls to their first championship in Bonita Valley.
Alex enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in a number of different activities, including playing both regular and video poker, taking trips to the casinos, and watching his favorite football team, The San Diego Chargers. He also loved hosting parties in order to spend time with his family and friends. Alex had an amazing sense of humor and loved making up great stories and telling jokes to make everyone around him laugh.
Alex Mancilla left us on June 4, 2011. He is survived by his loving wife Sonya; children Travis, Oscar, Melissa, Byanca and Bryana; as well as many other relatives and friends. Services were handled by Glen Abbey Mortuary. A funeral service was held at The Little Chapel of the Roses on June 14, 2011. Alex was laid to rest at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California.
Simply stated, Alex was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a true friend, father, husband, grandfather and coach, someone who was a vital part of everyone’s lives. Alex leaves behind him a legacy of lifelong friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life Alex Mancilla touched will always remember him with a smile.
