Elizabeth Spicer Hedrick, 86, of Boca Raton died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Willowbrooke Court Healthcare. Born November 10, 1927 in Visalia, California, she was the daughter of the late Martha M. Spicer and Thomas H. Spicer.
Mrs. Hedrick was an elementary school teacher for six years following her graduation from Monmouth College in 1949. She married Gordon Bruce Hedrick in Long Beach, California on June 20, 1952. Throughout their 57 year marriage, they lived in California, Washington, New York, and Florida.
She spent the majority of her life as a homemaker and volunteer within her community. She was a skilled seamstress, and enjoyed sewing clothing and quilts for her children and grandchildren.
While in NY she helped establish the Meals-on-Wheels program and became a regular volunteer driver. She volunteered for several programs for the blind—including reading and recording books, and working as a driver for an itinerant blind teacher.
In Boca Raton, she helped found the Shared Care program at Temple Beth El and also worked as Hospice volunteer. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boca Raton (now Grace Church), and was an ordained Deacon. She was a member of the VICE squad (Volunteers in Charge of Everything) at the church, and played with the hand bell choir.
Mrs. Hedrick was a 50-year member of PEO, and served several times in various offices of her chapter, including President, Vice President, and Treasurer.
Mrs. Hedrick is survived by her identical twin Sara Spicer Hedrick (California—brothers married identical twins!), her daughter Deborah Anderson (husband John) in Indiana; and her son Peter (wife Kathryn). She is also survived by four grandchildren including Kyle Van Horn (Maryland) and Erin Van Horn (Kentucky) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband Gordon; her brother Robert M. Spicer; and her brother-in-law Hubert L. Hedrick.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, March 18, at Willowbrooke Court at St. Andrews North, Boca Raton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County (www.hpbcf.org).
